Wool Felts
Wool has been used for centuries to make felt to help human beings to protect themselves from the elements of nature,i.e. cold, rain and sun. Some Anthropologist believe it was used as early as the Bronze Age (ca. 2600B.C.). Recently some felt artifacts have been discovered in a tomb in China, believed to date back to 1400 to 1200 B.C. Many cultures have used the fibres from sheep to produce carpets, rugs, wall hangings, capes, shoes, hats as well as felt panels for yurts and other kinds of shelters.
Up till today some people in Finland use long felted boots in the snow which insulate against the cold.
In the last few years the tradition of felting has seen a revival and many people enjoy the ancient art of felt making in all it’s simplicity. It can be hard physical work, but the results are often immensely satisfying and there are hardly any limits to the imagination and great scope for playing with different colours and textures.
At Handmade Presents we sell a wide range of fibres used for wet and dry felting as well as ready made art and craft felt, which - unlike the felt made from artificial fibres that is usually found in shops - is made from 100% pure wool.
For the more eco-conscious customers we stock organic plant dyed art and craft felt as well. Both types can either be bought in a 20×30cm square or by the metre or half metre. Soon we will be extending our range of pure wool felt to incorporate 3mm
thick felt in many different colours. For samples of the pure wool felt and the organic plant dyed wool felt visit this organic wool felts samples page. You can see our entire wool felts range at the felts pages.
